Aug 19 - Letter from Jacob's Mission

Letter from Jacob's Mission - Aug. 19, 2016

Hello Brother and Sister Derricott,

We will miss Elder Derricott very much in our Access Services Zone where he has served diligently.
He is very precise and complete in all that he is asked to do.  When leading the singing he follows
the beat exactly. He has been an excellent companion.  He utilizes the strengths of his companions
and understands their needs and weaknesses and accommodates accordingly.
We appreciate your son's willing spirit.

These are comments passed to us by some who have worked closely with your missionary son.

Cordially,

Elder and Sister Shurtz
(Access Services Zone Leaders)

Week 103 - Aug 18, 2016
Jacob -
Hello, everyone!
One thing I have to say about leaving day, the biggest thing I have to take home is the big blue container with things I have collected over the mission (plus my clothes and bedding.) I don't know if they will let me take some food home with me, but bring a cooler just in case! I hope to at least finish the perishables and leftovers before you come!
I have had a lot of experiences that have helped me shape my perspective. One is the injury to my arm. It was a good reminder for me to keep strong in the gospel. I would like to tell you a bit more about it after I return home. My arm has gotten a lot better and is basically working just like it used to. I just have to focus on not playing sports with it for at least another month. On the plus side, I don't have to wear a sling anymore!
This past week I have had the opportunity to attend the monthly temple session. After it was over I got a hug from President Tate and was congratulated for all the hard work I put into this mission. I am happy to know that I am loved and appreciated.
Well, it's hard to believe that this will be my last mission letter to you guys. I have learned a lot on this mission, and it gives me a comforting feeling that I could not have felt elsewhere. I will see you very soon.
Sincerely, the former Elder Derricott

Week 102 - August 11, 2016
Jacob -
Hello, everyone! My arm is a lot better now that I have gotten some motion back into it again. The doctor said that it would be at least a month before it would heal properly, so I should try to avoid sports and much heavy lifting.
I am excited to come back home and I pray that I will be taken care of and helped out during this time.
I am glad that my siblings are doing well. I am excited to see them again. I hope that Erik gets back on his feet again. I know that both are being aided as long as they are being righteous.
My companion, Elder Beach, doesn't talk much but he is loved by the other missionaries and I try to take good care of him.
This week after district meeting my district leader held a little "icebreaker" party. We had ice cream and played a little round of "Jenga." We played another game where flour was compacted into a can then placed on a plate, and then a coin was placed in the center of the flour pile. Each player took a turn using a butter knife to cut away as much flour as possible without letting the coin fall. Whoever makes the coin fall has to pick it up with their mouth! Another game we played was "What If?” Each of us wrote a "what if" question, then randomly selected someone else's question and answered it. Then someone reads the question they have and the next person reads the answer to the question they had, then they read the question they have, etc. I just thought I'd throw out some ideas for next time we had a social event.
Well, hope to see you again soon!
-Sincerely, Elder Derricott

Week 101 - Aug 4, 2016

Week 101, Aug. 4, 2016

Jacob - Hello, everyone! This week has been pretty good. My arm is actually doing very well, and I don't need a cast. The doctor told me and Elder Nash that fortunately the break was in place, so it's actually healing by itself. He recommended that I take the arm out of the sling and before I went home, I should try to see if it has as large a motion range as my good arm. If not, we may need to look into some therapy...
I also got the care package you sent, and it's nice to know that you all care about me and are looking out for me.
I have had a few jobs here in the library. One of them is a second check on how B2 books show up on the library's catalog. Sometimes it's a simple fix like if the call number or bar-codes don't match up. Other things like a broken or incorrect book are sent to the Inventory team for fixes.
I have noticed a grayish tint over the skyline, maybe it's smog?
I haven't heard about the fire in Hamilton, but I'm glad that all of you are safe.
I am excited to get back, but at the same time I will miss everyone here on the mission. I hope for the best for you and for them. I hope to talk to you again soon!
Sincerely, Elder Derricott

Tony -  Keep exercising that arm as much as you can.

Jacob -  I will work on my arm as much as time allows, but the doctor tells me to stay away from doing any heavy lifting until the arm is healed.

Tony -  But you can still do light and medium lifting. :)

Note from Elder Nash - Aug 1, 2016

Note from Elder Nash, Aug. 1, 2016

Hello Sister Derricott,

I wanted to provide you an update on Elder Derricott.  And it’s good news J

We went to an orthopedic specialist today.  Although he has a fracture, it is non-displaced and perfectly positioned, and will heal very nicely.  In his case, there is no need for casting his elbow, and in fact, the more he uses it, the better.  Stiffness and range of motion are the primary functions they are watching now.  The goal is to improve his range of motion to from the 125 or so degrees he has now, to about 145 degrees.

He has been asked to bend his arm often from a straight position up to his chest, and to not be afraid to use his arm.  He has been instructed to back off any lifting or any arm actions if he feels discomfort.  His arm will tell him if he is doing too much.  With a little time, he will be good as new.  If his range of motion is not where it should be when he leaves the mission, physical therapy will likely be recommended for when he gets home.

Thank you!

Week 99 - July 21, 2016

Week 99 - July 21, 2016
Jacob :
Hello, everyone! I don't know what everyone else is doing, but I'm doing well. This week we have had a young elders conference. President Tate talked about the coming of the Book of Mormon and what the process of translation was like for Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery.
We also learned that there might be certain foods that we were buying that might have "hidden sugars" such as sweet bread, flavored yogurt, pre-processed food, etc. Today while shopping I paid more attention to looking for foods high in vitamins, protein, and other more nutritional food.
Next Tuesday is transfers, and I'm nervous to learn who will be my last companion. It surely has come and gone by quickly. I have certainly seen God's hand in many of the things I have done on the mission, and I pray that He will continue to do so after my mission is over.
So this week I had to open a microfilm cabinet to see if I could help somebody find a film. When I got to the cabinet, I found that it wouldn't open. I wanted to get help, but I got the impression that I should try again. This time I found that there was a button below the handle that, because of the placing of labels on the door, I didn't even bother to press. I did so, and the door slid right open. So don't underestimate the influence that ohters on the other side of the veil can provide!
I believe that that's all that has happened with me this week. I would love to hear what you guys have been doing! I love you a bunch!
Sincerely, Elder Derricott

Tara:  Hello elder !  So good to hear from you!   I was just getting ready to write to you when your letter popped up. We are doing good. Did I already send you pictures of us with Grandma and Grandpa last weekend in Bannock? If not I will send them to you.

Great job on trying to eat healthier. I am really trying to feed our family healthier foods. Most of the time it isn't too hard, but when I haven't prepared it is tricky to come up with something that is good for us and that everyone likes.

Time is certainly moving quickly! I can't believe it's your last transfer... But life is always moving forward and it's good to have new experiences. We are so proud of you and your missionary service!  I hope you know how pleased we are, and how pleased Heavenly Father is with your work.

We have a long weekend, with Pioneer Day coming up. We haven't decided what we are going to do yet, but I'm sure we can find something fun. Erik is taking his last finals and finishing his last projects.  Emily has band camp next week. Dad and I keep working and taking care of the home and family

We love you and are glad you are doing well. I loved your story about the locked cabinet... Those are the kinds of things to write in your journal.  Heavenly Father answers our prayers, in big things, but more often in small and simple ways.  Never forget He is always there.

I love you s bunch and have started counting down the days till I get s big hug from you! Keep working hard and doing your best! Love mom

Jacob:  I don't believe I have got those pictures. Could you please send them?

Mom:  I'd love to. Give me a minute

Week 98 - July 14, 2016

Week 98 - July 14, 2016
Jacob:
Hello, everyone. It's nice to hear from you each week and get caught up on what is happening.
We had a dinner appointment with Elder and Sister Pocock this past Sunday. We ate some chicken fettuccine, fruit, and brownies with sherbet. It was a pretty fun time. I find that some of my favorite spiritual thoughts are about the story of Jonah and the rich young ruler. They are both very informative and I learned from previous companions the history and background behind these and other scriptural accounts, so I decided to incorporate some important elements from those stories into our lessons.
Yes, this week was the Hail an Farewell. I have a couple of pictures from the event that I expect to send you. You know that red means "stop" and green means "go," right? (except for watermelons :D) At the Hail and Farewell the red ribbon is to welcome those who have put their regular lifestyle on hold to serve a mission, and the green ribbon is for RMs who need to move on with their life. I have a month left, but since they don't have another Hail and Farewell for two months I had to wear it for this month. I do have mixed feelings, but come what may and love it.
I like that Elder Rodriguez is still trying to keep in touch. I haven't told him about the cruise, so I was wondering if you put it on a social media site and he happened to look at it? That seems like the only possible explanation to work on.
It's nice that Emily is learning to drive. I hope and pray for her success. I may need to re-register for a permit. Also, my new temple recommend (signed by the Salt Lake 2nd Branch presidency) is good for 90 days after the end of my mission, so I might have to re-renew it after I get home.
I am also praying for Erik's success and that he makes the most of his time.
Thank you everyone for backing me all the way!
Sincerely, Elder Derricott

Tara :  Hi son... Good to get a nice long letter from you!  Sounds like things are going well?

Jacob:  Yes they are. Thank you for noticing.

Tara:  How is your sleeping going?  I hope you are able to get to sleep better?

Jacob: Yes I am.

Tara:  Oh good! We are loving the pictures you sent. It is so fun to see you, and the activities you are doing? Do you like getting the pictures we send?

Jacob:  Yes I do

July 10, 2016
We just had dinner with your two wonderful sons.  They are companions, Elder Beach and Elder Derricott.  We have missionaries over for dinner regularly and today we were privileged to have your sons.  You would have been proud of how well they conducted themselves before, during and after the dinner.  They are maturing so well, and I am sure this mission is helping them develop in so many ways.  They gave a spiritual thought that was very impressive about the meeting of Christ and the young, rich nobleman.  Each week they also teach a principle from Preach My Gospel.  We love all the young missionaries, and your sons are some of our favorites.  Thank you for sharing your sons with us and raising them so well.  LOVE, Elder and Sister Pocock

Week 97 - July 7, 2016
Jacob:
Hello, everyone! This 4th was a pretty good one. We had some sports and a lunch with pizza and nachos. We also watched A More Perfect Union: America Becomes a Nation.
I wish Dad a happy (late) birthday and everyone else a good week!
I had an interesting experience this week. Elder Beach and I went to cash our monthly checks at Zion's Bank on Saturday, then I remembered that it was closed on weekends. So we had to hold onto our checks until the weekend was over. We tried again on Tuesday, but then I realized I forgot my ID. So I had to come back yesterday with my ID and I successfully got the month's pay. Guess it goes to show how planning pays an important role in your life.
It's nice that my siblings are preparing for the summer. It will be good for them to have a rest from the education for a while. I also congratulate Mom for her new calling and wish her the best of luck. I know that God calls each of us to different positions for a reason, and we must do our duties until He sees fit to release us from those duties.
Attached is a picture of all of our missionaries in the Family and Church History Headquarters Mission for the month of June (it was two years since the last photo was taken.) I am in the third row from the front, directly behind the senior missionary with the white shirt. In front of me is Elder Warden, who was my companion for the first few weeks I was here, next to his companion at the time Elder Teichert.
Anyways, I love you a bunch, and I wait to hear from you again!
Sincerely, Elder Derricott

Week 96 - June 30, 2016
Jacob:
Hello, everyone! I like your latest letter from home! I was going to tell you about Elder Nash's help and my satisfaction in knowing that I didn't have to worry about the ecclesiastical endorsement. I'm glad that you got some classes ready for me before I got home. Thank you!
I am excited for Independence Day. I still don't know what we are doing, but I bet it will be a great experience for all us missionaries.
I wish I could help out in the garden, I liked to do that a lot. Maybe Erik could help out with that more? I'm trying to cut back on the sugar and junk food.
Elder Beach is from Logan, so that's also not very far from here. He doesn't talk much, but sometimes he likes to hang out with the other missionaries. I do have some mixed feelings about the Hail and Farewell, but it will be fun anyways. The theme for this one is pioneer ancestors. Our branch has asked for volunteers to talk about the stories of their pioneer ancestors, but I couldn't think of any off the top of my head (unless James Campbell Livingston was one?). I would love to hear our family had any stories about pioneer stock!
Anyways, I hope that you have a good week and be sure to make the most of your time!
Sincerely, Elder Derricott

Tony:  James Campbell Livingston is certainly a good example of your ancestor.  You should volunteer to talk about him.  Your mom can give you some more details later

Week 94 - June 16, 2016
Jacob:
Hello, everyone! Last weekend was a summer block party at the Family History Library. We didn't go, of course, but it was nice to see it being set up. We also went to a lunch at City Creek with our district. We went to Pizza Studio, which sold some "artisan"-style pizzas. It is kind of expensive (about 7$ for a 6" pizza) but the quality, in our opinion, is worth the cost. It was raining that day, so they had to move some of the entertainment inside, which made it difficult to get to the elevator.
We also had a mission conference this week. One of the main subjects was on how to prevent bullying. I haven't participated in any bullying, and as far as I can tell I have never been the subject, but it's just something that is good to review.
Next week we have transfers. It's exciting, but at the same time nerve-wracking. Before President Tate, we used to get some sheets detailing where if you were moving or changing zones you learned exactly where you were going and you could plan ahead for the change. Now we have sheets that say something along the lines of, "You're moving apartments! Please pack so you can move tomorrow (meaning the day of transfers.)" At the transfer conference, we learn where we're moving and if we're changing zones. I don't know if it will be that way for me, but if anything changes in my p-day schedule I'll ask the Musgraves to let you know.
I love you all, I'm in good health, and I wish you all the best of luck!
Sincerely, Elder Derricott
P.S.- Out of curiosity, what type of cruise ship will we be on for our trip?

Hello, everyone! It has been a good week! I haven't gotten my ecclesiastical endorsement done yet, but I hope to get it done before I leave. I am doing well with diet and exercise, and I am trying to cut sugar from my diet.
During weekend sports we had Elder Andersen, a former missionary who left on medical leave come to our church. I thought he was coming back, but he told everyone who asked him that it simply wasn't so. It was nice to see him for a little bit, though.
We were told that there was going to be a special meeting for all the elders on the 7th, but that was as far as we knew. It turns out that our senior coordinators invited Brad Wilcox from BYU to talk to us about the gospel and what it meant to us. Here is a sum-up of what he said:
G- Godhead (Jesus Christ and God are distinct, separate beings with bodies of flesh and bones.)
O- Only true church (churches are like organs with a few keys, but ours is the only one with all the keys.)
S- Spirit (The Holy Ghost helps us make important decisions.)
P- Priesthood (You need the priesthood to effectively perform proper ordinances.)
E- Everyone (God wants everyone to know that the gospel has been restored.)
L- Living prophets (The prophets of this dispensation are here to lead us in the ways of righteousness.)
Yesterday we had the opportunity to attend the Ogden temple. It was a great experience, but it took a long time to get everyone on the buses back.
Today we had a delay in our shopping schedule, which is why our email time is kind of late. But it's nice to get a chance to hear from you!
Sincerely, Elder Derricott.

Tara:  Hi son!  Sounds like you have had a really good week. I especially like hearing about your meeting with Brother Wilcox!  So cool! That endorsement needs to be gone asap so talk to your leaders about it as soon as you can!!!! We can't get your classes till it is done. What held up your shopping today?

June 2, 2016 - Week 92
Jacob -

Things are going well in my area. I will try to send you some pictures as soon as I get the chance.
Memorial day was fun. I thought I was going to run out of water before the hike back was over, but luckily I was able to ration out my supply before the end. Also, I got a little sunburn in the areas I didn't think would be affected by the sun (i.e. the base of the neck and under the elbows.) Oh well, lesson learned! We also had some sports for a while. I was told that we would move inside eventually, but it was so nice outside that we never went in.
Anyways, one of the new duties I have at Access Services is at the AS Window. From there I get to help people print out ordinance cards and look up some books online.
I am doing very well, and I get to have some fun along the way. I will try to keep you informed as they happen!
Sincerely, Elder Derricott

Week 91 - May 26, 2016

Week 91 - May 26, 2016
Jacob -
Hello, everyone! We have had transfers this week, and this time around nothing has been changed. I'm still with Elder Robinson in the Access Services part of the Family History Library. Our prep day is still on Thursday, so that might be a slight obstacle.
This week I have had the opportunity to listen to Music and the Spoken Word with guest artists GENTRI, so it was a great opportunity to listen to them in person for the first time. I have heard some of their songs from the music players the other missionaries had including "Guide Me to Thee," which they performed with the orchestra.
I don't know if you heard, but on Memorial Day we're planning a pancake breakfast at our stake center, then we're hiking to the Salt Lake cemetery and later some other activities. I've forgotten if  any of our ancestors were there, so if you could send me any information about who might be there and where the are (preferably in the next hour or so) I would be thankful!
Do you have any trips planned for this summer, or are you waiting for me to get back for that cruise? I have been doing well, and I am eager to get what I can done before the mission is over!
Well, see you later!
Sincerely, Elder Derricott

Tara -  Hi son!!! So good to hear from you!  Once again your p-day snuck up on me!!!  So sorry!  We are doing good!

I think we do have some ancestors in the salt lake cemetery.  I will try to look real quick and see. We don't have any trips planned till after you get back... Emily has a lot of summer activities and Erik will be in school till the end of July.

Sounds like you have a fun Memorial Day weekend planned... We will probably have a barbecue, but I don't know if anything else special.  Maybe we will go to visit a few graves, like Grandma Graces and Uncle Vances.

How are you feeling and how is the exercise going?

I love you!!!!

Week 90 - May 19, 2016
Jacob -
Hello, everyone! I am doing very well. I have been doing good this past week. We had our bi-monthly "Hail and Farewell" dinner to say good-bye to all the missionaries leaving this mission and say hello to all the new ones coming in (it's hard to believe that the next one will be the last one I will be attending!) But I'm still trying to stay strong through the end!
It's nice to hear about what everyone's doing! I would like to be with you when you are trying new things. I think it would be nice to go to another country, but only if we can have at least somebody who knows the language! I would also like to show you many of the things that I learned about the mission!
You don't have to worry about getting me a copy of the Ensign, I already have one, plus a study guide. I will be going through it a couple times before the end, plus a month of whatever reading challenge we have next. I am also trying to stay healthy and getting some morning exercise into my day. Sister Tate told me that because I work inside most of the time I would need some supplements to add to my diet. The only problem is that I bought so many that I don't think I can use them all up before the end of my mission!
I work hard to feel the spirit everyday that I am here. I pray that everyone will do their best and make the most of their time here. I want Emily and Erik to know how proud I am for their effort to get more done. Bless you all!
-Sincerely, Elder Derricott

Tony -  What kind of supplements did you buy?You can probably bring them home with you.

Tara -  Hi son!  I'm just starting a student meeting. I loved this nice long letter! I love you a ton!!!!

Emily - Hey Jacob! Has anything funny happened to you this week? Love ya!

Jacob -
Hello, everyone! I am doing very well over here in the city. This week we had a mission conference, and I learned a lot that might help me sometime in the future. We also learned that President Oliver, of our branch, has some form of cancer and he expects to die within the next six months. I think a good idea would be to pray for him so that he can feel better, but if not then maybe pray that his death will be painless as can be.
I had a fun Mother's Day phone call, and I am doing very well and keeping my focus on the mission. However, President Tate told me that when I next met him I should have an ecclesiastical endorsement form. I'm asking the mission coordinator, Elder Musgrave, for help on that part. I was told that on the report I would need my student ID, so could you send that for me if possible? I was also wondering if there were some sort of animation class or something on BYU campus that I could look at?
Not much has happened this week, it was pretty much the same thing as most other weeks. I am, however, trying to improve my morning exercise routine. I have now included that "planking" exercise.
Well, that's it for now! See you later!
-Sincerely, Elder Derricott
PS. My mistake; it was President Larsen that has the disease, not President Oliver

Tara - Hi son!   Good to hear from you! I'm not used to your new p day schedule so sorry I do t have a letter ready for you!   Sounds like you are doing good!   We will pray for pres Larsen!!!!  I don't have your I card here at work with me, but will send your I number when I get home tonight, so check your email for that.  We are good... Just working and Kurds going to school this week.  We sure miss you and love you!!!!

Jacob -  I will probably get it sometime next week, then?

Tony - Your I-Number is : xxxxxxxxx

Hello everyone! It's fun that you got to see and be in these concerts. I still try to go to Music and the Spoken Word as often as I can, so I'm not too upset. However, my call home is expected to be around 10:00 and my companion will call around 9:00, so we might have to miss out on MSW. At least now you know.
President Tate told me to remind him at our next interview and he would help me with the Ecclesiastical Endorsement. My next meeting should be in a couple weeks or so, so I hope to get started on that soon. As for lessons, I can't think of anything I need now. I would, however like to take a class that deals with Photoshop so that I won't be left in the dark. After all, it's not like riding a bicycle.
I got my underwear, and they seemed to do well for the first week. I just washed them today, so I hope that they are still a good size for the rest of the week.
Turns out I was misinformed about our weekend activity last week. Instead of the concert we went to see Press Forward, a musical about the life of Nephi and his brothers. It was pretty entertaining, and if you wanted to see it the group who performed said they would post a video on YouTube.
For the most part, I am pretty healthy. I do have a question on how to prevent diarrhea, so I would be very pleased if I could receive some answers.
Thank you for listening to what I have to say. Happy Mother's Day!
Sincerely, Elder Derricott

Week 87 - April 28, 2016

Hello, everyone! Transfers have happened yet again. My P-day is now on Thursday, so you will have to make adjustments accordingly. I still have the same companion, but this time I am in Access Services. Basically that's making sure that the books in the Family History Library are in order. The first day was pretty eventful, though. I had a little bit of training with the library's computer programs, and I hope to be able to know how to use them. I also have a new companion, Elder Robinson. He's been out for almost as long as I have, with a two-month difference.
This weekend I am excited because the whole mission is going to see the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's Spring Concert. From what I hear, the concert will feature Mack Wilberg's work The Prodigal. It's a new piece featuring the famous parable set to lyrics. It will be exciting to see how it all works out. I will try to send some pictures for you.
I want to shop for some more fruits and veggies, so I have a couple questions. First, are there ways to determine the freshness of a melon (watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, etc.?) Also, what is the best way to preserve green veggies? If there is anything else you would like me to know, please don't hesitate to tell me.
I think that's it for this week! I hope you all have a good week!
Sincerely, Elder Derricott

Tara -
Hi Jacob! Fun to hear from you today!!!! I am at work and can't take a lot of time writing... Did you move apartments? I sent garments yesterday so they should get there in a few days.  Did you get the gift card for new shoes?

Keep green vegetables in the crisper of the fridge, and if they start to go bad, cut off the bad parts before it can spread, so the good parts stay fresh longer.  As for melons, don't buy any with soft or sunken spots. You can smell them, where the vine was attached, and if it smells like melon it is supposed to be ripe.

At first you said you have the same companion, then later you said your new companion is Elder Robinson? I am a bit confused?

I love you and am glad that you are doing good!!!! I would love some more pictures, and to hear about the spring concert.  Our church us from 2-5 in the evening, so if you can do your Mother's Day phone call in the morning, that would be best.  Love you tons!!!!

Jacob -I am sorry for the confusion. I do have Elder Robinson as my new companion.
Any other advice on freshness of food?

Tara -Keep it in the fridge, and only buy as much as you will eat within a week. It doesn't stay fresh much longer than that. Also, wash it before eating. Don't put bananas in the fridge because it makes them turn brown.

Did you get the money for shoes?

Jacob - Yes I got the money for the shoes. I also took the opportunity to buy the shoes this week!

Week 86 - April 23, 2016
Jacob -
Hello everyone! This week has been interesting. There has been some sort of bug going around with the young elders, and unfortunately I was one of the victims. As a result I haven't been able to get up early to do early morning exercises. Fortunately my cold is going away and I hope to do better this upcoming week. I have also been taking some medicine and stuff with Vitamin C to help me out with the cold.
We also had the opportunity to go on another monthly temple session this week. It's a good time to think and reflect on what God has done for us so that we can retain our agency.
We had our stake conference last week. I especially liked the testimonies given by some of the stake members. I would like to take the opportunity to bear my testimony next time there is an event like that.
It's nice that you can have such a nice trip up at Yellowstone. I'm not sure when, but some of the young elders say that we might be going up to the location where the Bible Videos were filmed. That's just a rumor, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
I haven't gotten that gift card yet, but I hope that the money can be enough so that I can get some new shoes. Also, this last week I have somehow ended up with only four pairs of undergarments and I might need some more. If you would be so kind as to send me some asap I would be very happy.
I don't believe I have heard of the Salt Lake Children's Choir, but I would like to hear some of their stuff.
I hope that I can get better, and I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely, Elder Derricott

Tara -  Sounds like an unfortunate laundry mishap!  What size garments do you need, and how many pairs?  I'm sorry you haven't been feeling good, and hope you get better soon. Which temple did you go to?

Jacob - I need about 5 pairs of medium-sized garments. We went to the Salt Lake temple and I expect that we will keep going until the mission gets enough money for another temple trip.

Tara -  I will get some garments sent soon. I love the Salt Lake temple, but have only been inside a couple times.  What a blessing it is that you have been able to go so much! What kind of medicine are you taking got your cold?

Hello everyone! I'm doing well here at SLC. We had a young missionary conference, and we learned a lot about setting goals. I find this spiritual because I was starting to set some goals earlier in the week, and I feel like this conference was an an answer as to how I would get started.
So this week I decided to measure myself at the nurse's office and check my BMI, and apparently I'm in the "overweight" range. Fortunately I started to do my own morning exercises earlier this week, so I hope to be somewhat trimmer by the time I return home. I would like your advice on how often I should check my weight.
I'm glad that you're visiting Yellowstone. That's something that I would like to do after I get back. President Tate said that if I was planning to go back to BYU I would need an ecclesiastical endorsement so that next time we meet (which should bee within a month) he and I could get started on it.
The one place that sells missionary shoes, Mr. Mac, has some good quality shoes. However, they are quite expensive. I suppose you could try to find their website and see if you can send the money, but if that doesn't work you can just buy some shoes and send them here.
That's it for this week! I hope to hear from you soon! I also hope to hear more about Grandpa and Grandma's Disneyland trip! ;)
Sincerely, Elder Derricott

Tony -  I think you should check your weight as often as possible. I check mine daily.

Hello, everyone! This week has been pretty good. I enjoyed General Conference a lot! We wanted to watch the first session in the stake center, but it turns out that it had been reserved for those who speak Mandarin. We were lucky there was a technician there to set up a television in another room, though we lost the signal at some point during the first part and missed one of the speakers. Our district leader found a way to get to the theaters for the other sessions without running into the protestors, and we had tickets reserved for the Priesthood session.
I wasn't surprised that President Monson made what he had to say short, considering his health. I was, however, surprised by the way Elder Holland spoke in his message; it felt a lot more calm and inviting than some of his speeches I've heard in the past. His speech was perhaps one of my favorites this General Conference. I hope that I can look forward to every tomorrow with a smile on my face.
So concerning the early missionaries project, we're coming down to the end of a batch. I don't know if the leader in charge of the project has some extra papers for us to work on for it or if they are planning to have us work on something else once it's done.
I have been making an effort to try to get up earlier and get some more stuff done in the mornings. It's been getting warmer here, too. During the afternoon my companion and I have to watch out for wasps flying around the heat near the buildings. Got any advice?
I believe that that is everything I have to say for this week. I hope that you all have a good week!
Sincerely, Elder Derricott

Tara -  Hi son! I also thought Elder Hollands talk was amazing. It was probably my favorite too. What kinds of things have you been working on when you get up early?  My only advice for avoiding the wasps is to run faster than them!😉.

Week 83 - April 1, 2016
Jacob - Hello, everyone! Sounds like you had fun with burning away the back berm. It's a good thing that the fire wasn't too dangerous.
I hope that Erik gets better from the surgery. I will be praying for him throughout the week.
I am also excited about General Conference, and I will hopefully send some pictures. I am looking forward to what the apostles and presidency have to say. I noticed that President Monson had some troubles staying up during last conference. I hope that he does better, whether in this life or in the next life.
Sorry I don't have much to say, except

the early missionary project is coming along great. Two young elders have left me and Elder Hellebrand to do most of the work because one of them had medical release and his companion was sent to another zone. Hopefully we get some more help next transfers!
Love you all and I hope to see you soon!
-Sincerely, Elder Derricott

Tara -  Hi buddy!   How are things?  Sounds like all is well on the missionary front! Are you going to attend priesthood session of conference?

Jacob -  Yes we will attend priesthood session. I hope to be on the camera for you!

Tara -  We will certainly be watching for you!  Thanks for the pictures too... I love the flowers! I hope I get one with your handsome face soon. (Hint, hint). Love you tons! We are just getting ready to leave for Montana.

Week 82 - March 26, 2016

Week 82 - March 26, 2016
Jacob -
Hello, everyone! I am looking forward to Easter very much. I forgot that tomorrow is fast Sunday. It's a good thing you told me now before I got too far with my package. I am also looking forward to General Conference. However, because of that we are not going to shop for next week; we will instead shop for two weeks today and save money for the week after GC. Also, due to the Women's Session we will not have sports in the stake center. Instead we be back at the apartments hanging out with the other elders.
I got to watch the broadcast of the dedication. It surprises me that people would get to the spiritual thoughts before the dedication, but I guess the rule "save the best for last" can apply in this case. It was a very spiritual experience. Transfers did happen, but the only thing that affected me and Elder Hellebrand is that we moved apartments. Guess the Church History Library believes we're too valuable to lose. Also, our shopping time has been moved down from noon (waaaaaaaaay down) to 4:00 in the afternoon. I guess this means that we will have to do our laundry after lunch.
Well, nothing exciting so far, so I guess I'll see you later.
-Elder Derricott
PS- I don't have pictures this week, but I promise to send you some for next week. My understanding is that Saturday P-day elders write the day before Conference during zone.

Tara -  Sounds like you are doing good. Tell us about the process of moving apartments... How does that work?  Take some pics of hanging out with the other elders tonight.  That would be fun for us.

Jacob -  You get a transfer sheet the day before transfers, and after night zone you spend time packing up things that will go into the new apartment after transfers.

Hello, everyone! I am doing very well in Salt Lake City. We went to the Bountiful temple for our monthly temple trip, and we hope that similar events will happen in the future. We have also had  apartment inspections by our housing coordinators, along with fire and emergency training in case of an emergency. Maybe that's something you can do next family home evening?
Peter and the Starcatchers sounds like fun. If you still have the book, I would like to get set up with reading it after I get home. I am also looking forward to being in school again.
For Easter we are probably going to listen to a special program in our stake meeting. I will be looking forward to that package.
During the day we work on the Early Mormon Missionaries Database, like adding some Church History Library artifacts to the database. I like my companion a lot. However, we have transfers this upcoming Tuesday and I don't know if I will be his companion for much longer.
We are working on improving the living conditions of our apartments, like slowly building up on emergency supplies and working on meal plans.
This week in the Doctrine and covenants I am learning of what is mentioned in the Word of Wisdom. One of my former companions told me that this revelation was received at a time before the world knew that tobacco, alcohol, and other such substances actually did more harm to the human body than good.
That's it for this week! I hope to see you again soon!
Sincerely, Elder Derricott

Tara -  Hi... Are you still there? I am just leaving a relief society service project where we made some clothing for refugees and toys for orphans.

Jacob -  That's very nice. I hope that we can get something like that done sometime on the mission.

Tara -  How's your health? Is there anything you need us to send in your Easter package? The temple trip sounds great... Let us know the dedication of the Provo temple goes.

Jacob - If there are any special pens that can write on dark-colored material, could I get a hold on some of those?

Tara -  I will see if I can find any.  I love you!!!

Week 80 - March 12, 2016

Week 80 - March 12, 2016
Jacob -
Hello, everyone! Not much has happened this week, but I did see that Temple Square has been working on putting up some flowers (they still haven't taken down all the Christmas decorations yet!) Anyways, we are going to have a temple trip this week, and President Tate managed to hire a bus to take us to the Bountiful temple. Elder Musgrave has agreed to give everyone 8$ for lunch afterwards, so that's something to look forward to. Not this upcoming Sunday, but the next Sunday, we are going to view the Provo temple dedication, so that's something to look forward to. We are also having our carpets shampooed sometime this month; we're still waiting for more information about that.
Anyways, I have been having a lot of fun with the Doctrine and Covenants challenge. I learned a lot about the different people that Joseph Smith interacted with, like the guy who used to be a Shaker and tried teaching the other Shakers about the restored gospel, which they initially rejected. I also learned about a time when Joseph and his brethren attempted to maneuver the river and learned that the Adversary was taking control of the river. Pretty interesting stuff, alright.
Well, I hope to hear from you soon! I look forward to this time every week!
Sincerely, Elder Derricott

Tara -  Hi son... I wasn't expecting to heR from you till this afternoon. Why so early? I didn't get a chance to write to you yet! We are all good. Dad and I are out walking along a river this morning.  Tell us about the doctrine and covenants challenge... The temple trip and lunch sounds awesome!

Jacob - My companion and I had the idea to come here in the morning and do our laundry in the afternoon. That way, there's less crowds to deal with.
We're reading through the Doctrine and Covenants three times in a row, just like our previous challenges. I'm surprised that you haven't heard anything about this beforehand; we started our second time through this month.

Tara -  This is the first we have heard of the challenge. So did you already do your shopping today? How is your sleeping going?

Jacob -  We're still shopping at noon, there's just not a set time for emails or laundry. My sleeping is doing much better, now that I have those earplugs. By the way, is there any way that I can clean them so I won't have to throw them away?

Tara -  Try some soap and warm water on the earplugs. If it doesn't work, you can buy more at Walmart or someplace like that, anything else going on? We sure love you and miss you!

Hello, everyone! Looks like everybody had a fun week! Is there a chance that your "Scotch Christmas" is going to become a family tradition, or was it that one week only? I would like to have an opportunity to celebrate it with you. I thought of a humorous video on lds.org about a boy learning to play the bagpipes. I didn't even know that Lori even had bagpipes.
I am still the district leader, but President Tate says that he wants to give everyone on the mission a chance for leadership so I might not be a district leader for much longer. Elder Hellebrand is very talkative and great to get along with. He is also kind and likes to hold the door open for people, even if it's a large crowd.
I got the earplugs, and they seem to be helping a bit. I haven't seen much that looks like spring started, but I'm hoping that will change in the future. I am having a great time here.
Just one thing I need. President Tate told me that my release date is on August 25, but he wants to make sure that I get back in time for my fall semester. Could you maybe tell me when the start date is so neither of us are in the dark? It would shave off a lot of time.
Many thanks.

Tara -
Hi there! Good to hear from you.   I'm glad you are living your mission so much... It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for sure!  Elder Hellebrand sounds like a great guy... Where is he from?

We did Scotch Christmas last year so I'm hoping it will be a tradition that we continue... Maybe we can even add other countries that our ancestors came from!

What else is going on with you?

I am excited and sad to get your release date... I miss you a ton, but the mission has been so good for you!!  It looks like the fall semester starts on Sept 12th. I will start working on your registration, etc... If that is what you plan on doing.

Week 78 - Feb 27, 2016
Jacob -
Hello, everyone! I am doing well this week. I am still in the same apartment, but my assignments and companion have changed. I am now companions with Elder Hellebrand, and he is very fun to be around.
I have been transferred back to the Church History Library which, if you remember, was the zone I was in when I first started the mission. Right now I have been assigned to adding more sources to the Church History missionary website. My evening zone is Research Essentials, which allows elders the opportunity to learn new skills on family history work, and then put those skills to work and help them find more about their lineage. Because some elders are tied up with other assignments during the day, this is the perfect opportunity for them to relax and get some research done.
That's basically it for me. I'm planing on cooking a pizza for dinner tonight, and the rest of the evening is a blur. Some say that sports is cancelled because there is an event in the cultural hall tonight. Some also say that sports will be held outside instead, but I'm skeptical on that claim.
Anyways, it sounds like you are all making the most of your time over there. I would love to get those pictures and, if possible, a copy of that homecoming talk. Thank you and have a good day!
Sincerely-
Elder Derricott

Jacob -  I haven't seen anyone reply for over an hour. Is everyone alive?

Week 77 - Feb 20, 2016
Jacob -
Hello everyone! Turns out I was mistaken about those spots on my foot. Turns out they were dry spots and they needed a little lotion. I guess the only thing to tell is that the mission president is concerned about clean apartments and he wants us to clean out our apartments before next transfer comes around. We did a deep-clean in our apartment last night and today, and all we have to do is make sure it stays clean.
It's nice that Carissa got home safely, and I can't wait to see her and the family when I get back! Could you send a copy of the homecoming talk?
It has been warming up here, too. There was a surprise snowstorm this Thursday, but the weather today has basically melted it away. While we were walking home we noticed that the snow melting off the side of the Tabernacle made a "waterfall" off the south-west side. I don't like the mud either, thank you very much.
Basically that's it for this week. I would like to have a set of multi-color pens and a set of earmuffs or earplugs for sleeping. I think it would help out a bit when I sleep. Thanks!
Other than that, I am doing very well! I will be in touch and I will let the Musgraves know if my p-day schedule needs to change so I can email you.
Sincerely,
Elder Derricott

Week 76 - Feb 13, 2016

 Week 76 - Feb 13, 2016
Jacob:
Hello, everyone! It has been a good week here in Salt Lake City. Like I said before, we didn't have much opportunity to visit Rootstech. However, all of the young elders got a free notebook with a holder that I started to write my shopping lists in. Sister Tate suggested that we buy some daily multivitamins and vitamin D3 because many of the young elders were inside most of the time and didn't get enough sunlight. I have noticed some dark spots on the bottom of my feet; is it athlete's foot? If it is, I probably need to get some foot spray.
Now on to happier things...
I have some good friends here on the mission, I should enjoy it while it lasts because they go home a few months earlier than I do. Some of the young elders make little contact cards for the other elders before they leave.
It's glad that Erik and Emily are stepping out of their comfort zones and trying new things. They should be proud of their hard work.
A couple more things to share, I have some links to share with you.
The first is for the missionary database I was working on during the mission. It's called "Go Ye Into the World" and it would be fun to try out.
https://history.lds.org/missionary/?lang=eng
This one is for a gingerbread model of the Salt Lake Tabernacle complete with audience, MoTab, and the organ.
http://www.mormontabernaclechoir.org/articles/gingerbread-tabernacle.html
Love you!

Tara:
Hi son! Good to hear from you!!! I don't know what the spots on your feet are... Athletes foot usually has reddish spots, feels itchy, and the skin starts peeling. Maybe see the mission nurse about it when you get a chance?  Let me know what you find out!
I'm glad you have good friends on the mission.  The cool thing is that you can continue to keep in touch with them after missions are over!  Email and Facebook make it so easy!  I am excited to check out the links you shared.... Should be fun!
Did you get that package of treats yet?  If not, you should be getting it on Monday.
I LOVE the pictures!!!!!
Tony:
You could also take a picture of your foot spots and we might be able to help.
Jacob:
Yes, I did get the package. There are a lot of things in there that are so tempting... but I must try to stay the course of healthiness!
Tara:
There are a lot of yummy treats.... Be sure to share them, and make them last a while.... That way you can have an occasional treat when you want one, but still stay healthy!  Some of them are actually pretty good for you!  Great job being aware of what you are eating.  I am proud of you and I love you!

Me and my companion, Elder Dull

Jacob: Hello, everyone! It's been a pretty good week here up in SLC. I'm writing on Friday because the library will be packed with Rootstech visitors tomorrow. Of course, our Walmart is on another side of town, so that won't affect us too much. I recommend that next time you're free, you can invite a couple people to come with you to Rootstech.
I read a little bit on the Provo temple and how it used to be a tabernacle. Have you (or we) ever visited it before it was reconstructed? From what I found, it was just beautiful!
I am trying to make sure that everyone in my district is well-informed about what is happening. We are currently making the effort to make sure that our apartments are as clean as possible, because after the new apartment inspectors came in a few months ago we have been stressing the importance of cleanliness and trying to teach our new elders about apartment maintenance. We sure need the help with cleaning around here! I am working on teaching about keeping the table and dishes clean.
When we went out for dinner I managed to snap a couple of images of Blue Iguana's 5-pound burrito for you. We actually found that there was a similar deal at the Red Iguana at City Creek that cost less for more, so Elder Dull plans not eating the stuff from Blue Iguana anytime soon. I don't think I could eat anything as big or as spicy, not even if somebody paid me to do it.
That's it for this week! I hope to talk again next week.
Sincerely,
Elder Derricott
Tara: Hi son!   Sounds like you are doing good!  The Provo temple was a tabernacle previously... The architecture and decoration were absolutely stunning!!!  I loved it! I don't think we have been there before.

That burrito is huge!  I wouldn't be able to eat it either!  Did elder Dull eat the whole thing? Dad and I are considering eating at one of the iguana restaurants while we are here...which one do you recommend?

Where is the picture of Christ located... The one that you sent a photo of?  Did you see the pictures that dad sent of us superimposed over the other photos? Don't forget that I want to get a picture of you and elder Dull together!  I love you!
Jacob:
Blue Iguana is good, but if you want to avoid dark alleys I would recommend "Red."
That picture was made of wood, and it's in the medical clinic on the third floor of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.
I like that picture with dad as Custer or somebody.

Week 74 - Jan 30, 2016

Week 74 - Jan 30, 2016
Jacob:
Hello everyone! Transfers went well. My district was only affected by a change of two elders; I'm still companions with Elder Dull.
As far as I can tell, we're not working at Rootstech unless we are called to work during that time. I hope that we get a schedule for what to do when it happens! I expect a lot of people will be attending it.
We have also had a couple of snow storms up here too, and there's even one today! We woke up early this morning to do our laundry and found about an inch of snow. It's about six inches now, along with some slush. I had to change my socks before noon. Actually we don't go to the super Walmart anymore. During my time with Elder Bowers we heard about an incident where one of our mission vehicles got stolen and hit another elder. After that the decision was made that we would go shopping at a smaller Walmart at the other side of town.
Today we went to Mr. Mac and the Church History Museum (which reminds me, I need a new black missionary belt before my mission is up.) Later today we are celebrating a missionary's birthday by going to a restaurant called "Blue Iguana." I want to get a simple meal, and Elder Dull's going to try one of their 5-pound burritos.
Apparently our mission is "getting more expensive," so that's why we're getting a little more money each month.
I hope you're all doing well. See you later!
Tara:  Sounds like a lot of snow today!  I've never been to Blue Iguana...but I've heard it's good! Take a picture of the 5 pound burrito for me. That sounds like enough food to make a person sick!   It will probably be easiest for you to get a new belt at Walmart when you get a chance...that way you can make sure it is the right size for you. If you need us to send some extra money for one, let me know.  How is the arbitrator job going?
Jacob: I am enjoying being an arbitrator very much. Of course, sometimes you have to pay attention to when the information is handwritten, and it's even worse when they write shorthand! I could only use 20$ or so for the belt.
Tara:  I bet it can be difficult to figure out some of that old handwriting! I know I have a hard time indexing some of it.  We will get some money sent for a belt for you. Are you feeling healthy and doing well physically?
Jacob: Yes I am. It's just that my current black belt is wearing out and needs to be replaced.

Week 73 - Jan 23, 2016

Week 73 - Jan 23, 2016
Jacob:
Hello everyone! It seems like you are doing alright back at home. Last weekend we went to the temple to help some other elders get some baptisms and confirmations done. We were planning to do some initiatories done too, but there wasn't enough time and we hadn't had dinner yet.
We also decided to pull out of dodge-ball for sports because it was getting too competitive and my companion got injured. It says right in the handbook that sports should not be too intense, but we believe that dodge-ball is getting too intense especially with new young elders who don't know their own strength. As a result my companion and our sports coordinators are trying to find ways to make indoor sports more fun and safe.
Let's go on to something happier...
In my Indexing I got moved up to "Arbitrator" status because FamilySearch was looking for more arbitrators. Basically it's like indexing, except you get two lists that were already done for a single record. I get to solve the differences between the two lists and figure which item on either list is more correct. Or if they're both wrong I get to type in the correct answer.
If it's help on family history work, then there are some lessons and videos by Leland Moon on the FamilySearch website in the Learning Center (under "Get Help".) They are especially good for those who are beginning family history work. There are also a bunch of family history videos in lds.org's Media Library that you can use.
It's nice that everyone is breaking out of their comfort zones this year. I hope that you all put your best foot forward and have a good year.
Sincerely,
Elder Derricott
